13-year-old schoolgirl to shave off hair to raise money for Whittington Hospital

A 13-year-old schoolgirl is shaving off her hair to raise money for staff at the Whittington hospital.

Ailbhe Shields, who was born in the Archway hospital, said she came up with the idea to shave off her shoulder-length hair after a group of boys at her school buzzed their hair because they were “bored at home” following the government’s closure of all schools due to the coronavirus pandemic.

She hopes the money raised, already more than £800, can help staff at the hospital who are “saving lives” every day.

She said: “I was born in the Whittington and so was my brother. Now they are under a lot of stress and pressure and they have to go out to work every day so that we can be at home safe.

“Being at home might be difficult for some of us but if we do this and follow the guidelines then we can help them save lives.”

Ailbhe’s mother Nessa Parkinson will be shaving her daughter’s hair on Wednesday April 1.

Ailbhe added: “I’m more excited than worried to be honest, though maybe that’s because I haven’t thought about the actual shaving too much. It will be a good experience.”

Ms Parkinson, who used to live near Crouch End but has moved to Bounds Green, told the Tribune: “The Whittington is close to home and close to our hearts. Everyone is feeling so connected to the NHS now and we are realising more and more the amazing work they do for us all.”

Ailbhe added: “Nurses and doctors are spending their whole jobs saving lives and helping people out, they deserve more recognition.”

All money raised will go to the hospital’s relief fund while the hair will go to the Little Princess Trust which provides wigs for children who have lost their hair through diseases like cancer and alopecia.

The family have set up a Just Giving fundraiser online, to donate click here.
