2,000 back fight to save centre for elderly

ISLINGTON’S sole opposition councillor handed in a 2,000-strong petition to the Town Hall opposing plans to close an elderly day care centre on Thursday.

Cllr Caroline Russell, from the Green Party, presented the petition with 2,303 signatures against the planned closure of Sotheby Mews day centre in Highbury.

Users of the centre have been in a long-running battle with the council as they say they weren’t consulted on proposals to close the centre and move their services to Highbury Roundhouse – a 15-minute walk way. But the Town Hall say the site will open up land for new council housing and the pensioners will receive the same services at the Roundhouse.

The council is now expected to debate the future of the centre at a meeting following the submission of the petition.
