24 moped victims in one hour

Police launch appeal for witnesses after four suspects on two mopeds go on crime spree

08 December, 2017 — By Joe Cooper

MOPED thieves went on a spree in Essex Road, racking up 24 victims in just one hour.

Police were initially called at 5pm on Monday after a woman reported that four suspects on two mopeds had stolen her mobile phone.

Officers were then called to further incidents and later confirmed that there were 24 separate victims, none of whom were hurt.

Officers then deployed their latest weapon in the fight against moped crime – a stinger which slowly and safely deflates tyres. On the back of the Essex Road incidents, they were given permission to set up the stinger in Southampton Road, Gospel Oak.

The suspects fled on foot but officers were able to recover a moped which is currently being forensically examined.

Detective Inspector Greg Coates, from the Central North Command Unit, said: “I am appealing for anyone who saw any of these thefts to contact police. I would also like to hear from anyone who may have filmed the offences on their mobile phones or dash-cams to come forward.

“Last night, we successfully deployed a stinger and were able to recover one of the mopeds. This is a new tactic that has been rolled out across London as part of our continued efforts to tackle scooter-enabled crime.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers from the Met’s Operation Attrition bases at Islington via 101 or @MetCC.

There have been no arrests and enquiries continue.
