PLAYERS from Islington Admiral United were breathing a huge sigh of relief on Monday night when they survived a potential major cup upset at the football pitches in Market Road.

It looked like business as usual when the Islington Midweek League Premier Division high-flyers took the lead in their Ken Doherty Memorial Cup third-round tie against Selale, courtesy of a composed finish from Ali Yaslem.

Going into the final 15 minutes of the match it was a completely different story, however, as the Division Two underdogs had somehow managed to turn the game around to take a 3-1 lead.

Only a string of fine saves from goalkeeper Jason Hartles saved Admiral from certain defeat.

With time running out and a cup exit looking ever more likely, Admiral woke up and scored two late goals.

Sam Donoghue reduced the deficit before player-manager Anthony Clark set up Altan Ceylan to level the scores and send the tie to penalties.

In the resulting shootout Donoghue, Liam Magwood, Mariusz Serwin, Bradley Osborne and Andrew White all held their nerve to find the back of the net from 12-yards as a relieved Admiral escaped with a 5-4 victory.
