AN all-electric street sweeping machine is on trial as part of a drive to reduce carbon emissions.
The aim is to assess whether electric vehicles could replace the petrol-powered fleet currently cleaning Islington streets.
The machines are quieter and faster than traditional road sweepers, have significantly lower running costs and use water spray to reduce the dust kicked up by sweeping.
Islington’s transport and environment chief Councillor Claudia Webbe said: “We are keen to keep pushing and seeing how technological advances, like these all-electric sweepers, might help us improve our services and reduce emissions to stay one step ahead.” The trial comes weeks after council chiefs approved plans for more than 100 roadside charging points for electric cars.
