Arsenal boss Unai Emery: ‘We need to help them and give them these chances’
UNAI Emery says he believes it’s important to give the youngsters at Arsenal a chance in the first team, providing that doesn’t come at the cost of a victory.
Midfielder Joe Willock repaid the Gunners gaffer for giving him a starting berth in the FA Cup third round tie at Blackpool on Saturday by scoring two goals, while striker Eddie Nketiah and defender Zech Medley were also both given a runout against the League One side.
Emery has already revealed his hopes of bringing in new faces this month, but insists it won’t hinder the opportunities for those youth players who can prove they have “the right attitude”.
“I usually work with young players and give them the opportunity to work with us. Give them chances to play but only if we can get the victory,” he said. “My responsibility is to work with them and here I want to do that. But each player is going to earn in his way more or less chances with his performances and his everyday work.
“When they are playing with Freddie Ljungberg in the Under-23s we are looking at their performances and their attitude, if it’s OK or not. And at the moment we are going to continue in this way.
“We know they can train with us and start playing matches, but it is very difficult. We need to help them and give them these chances.”
The January transfer window is now in full swing, with Arsenal being heavily linked with a move for Barcelona’s Denis Suarez. The midfielder has worked with Emery before at Sevilla, and the Arsenal boss refused to dampen the speculation when he revealed that Suarez plays in a position where the north Londoners are looking to strengthen.
“He (Suarez) was playing as a left or right winger for Sevilla when he was with me,” said Emery, before adding of the clubs transfer activities: “I think the club is working for the possibility to bring in some players who can help us during this next four months of competition.
“It’s a different situation. If the transfer market can help us find a centre-back, the possibility to bring them in is not easy because we also have Mavropanos coming back from injury. If we have the possibility to sign some important players, we can do it. At left or right wing, perhaps one player can help us in this position. We will only sign players who give us quality.”
