ISLINGTON Council has offered to meet with a publican to discuss the prospect of bringing Christmas lights to Highbury’s “forgotten zone”.
Lights went up this week in Highbury Barn to bring festive cheer to shopkeepers and residents. But Una Mckernan, who helps run The Gunners pub in Blackstock Road, saw it as another year when her part of town was left in the dark.
“It’s a void in our area, it seems like a forgotten zone,” she said. “There are lots of shops and bars down this way, and schools, nurseries and a big estate with lots of children.”
The Town Hall’s economy chief, Cllr Asima Shaikh, said: “At a time when many other councils have had to make the difficult decision not to put on Christmas lights at all due to funding pressures, we have done so as we recognise their importance to the local community.
“We welcome any feedback from residents and businesses, and would be happy to meet with representatives from The Gunners pub to discuss any potential future plans for extending the lights further.”
