A NIGHTCLUB that was shut down by Town Hall chiefs after several violent incidents is set to be transformed into a “1970s, 80s and 90s retro” music venue.

Club Aquarium, known for being one of London’s last venues with a 24-hour licence – and for having a swimming pool inside – was closed by the council last year after reports of brawls and a sexual assault.

Paul Nelson, one of the Old Street venue’s founders in 1995, sold his shares in 2001.

He has now returned in a bid to revive it. Mr Nelson said he wanted to make the club “one of the most sought-after live music venues in London” hosting “high profile artists” and up-and-coming bands.

He added: “Club Aquarium is outdated and tired. I do not intend changing anything structurally but the whole venue will be decorated to a high standard, taking into account the retro theme of ‘Glam’.”

A licence application, which would see the venue open till 2am on weekends, will be considered next month.
