HUNDREDS turned out for the third annual Big Jewish Summer Fete in Highbury Fields, writes Calum Fraser.
Islington South MP Emily Thornberry, celebrity barrister Robert Rinder and Mayor of Islington Rakhia Ismail attended the festival on Sunday.
At the start of the event, Rabbi Mendy Korer, of Chabad Islington, said: ‘We are excited to welcome everyone to our third year of the summer fete. The need for bringing the community together is only getting more and more important.’
Michelle Huberman, who hosted a Harif exhibition about Jews from North Africa and the Middle East, said: “It’s been a really beautiful day. Emily Thornberry was very attentive. You could tell she was interested in what we were saying.”
Councillor Ismail said in her speech: “I came to Islington as a refugee 30 years ago and I never thought I would stand on this stage as the Mayor of Islington.
“This event has brought together all children of Adam and Eve to celebrate Jewish culture and the diversity of the borough.”
Attractions included live music, food stalls, face painting and children’s yoga classes.
