Bold steps are being taken on the climate emergency

14 February, 2020

• FURTHER to the report (Call for action on ‘deadly impact’ of air pollution in Islington, February 7), as a member of the environment and scrutiny committee I attended the meeting on February 4 where we heard that air quality has improved in Islington, especially since the surcharge was placed on diesel cars.

Early this week Islington became the first council in the country to publish air quality monitoring data from outside our schools.

The data shows a huge improvement in air quality across the borough, but we know there is much more to do. The council is also extending the monitoring of air pollution outside Islington’s nurseries as well as outside all Islington schools.

The committee also heard of the close work with Islington Clean Air Parents on air pollution including producing “Clean Air School Kits” to tackle air pollution inside our classrooms.

We are taking a number of measures to make our roads safer and tackle air pollution, including making all Islington Council-controlled streets 20mph speed limit streets; the removal of more dangerous gyratories from our borough than any other London borough; and our recently announced budget proposals for the year ahead include more than doubling the number of “school streets” to 30.

A “Living Streets” representative also attended the meeting and praised Islington’s strategy for transport in the borough, with low traffic neighbourhoods, which will make Islington an attractive and safe place to walk and cycle.

It is vital that the environment in the borough is improved for everyone and that we work together to do this.

We welcome Islington Clean Air Parents and Extinction Rebellion’s input and help to change quickly and hope that they can acknowledge the bold steps being taking to tackle the climate emergency by the council, and work with the council and local communities, not against us.
