Bellanger: ‘Brasserie just didn’t catch on in Islington’

High-end Bellanger calls it a day after three years

A HIGH-END brasserie in Angel that is part of a chain of swish London restaurants is due to close with bosses admitting it did not catch the “imagination of the community”.

Bellanger in Islington Green is part of the Corbin and King chain of restaurants that include Mayfair’s The Wolseley and Brasserie Zedel in Soho – a favourite of ­theatre-goers before a West End show.

Sunday will be the last day punters will be able to get their hands on Escargots à la Persillade (snails) or Jersey Rock oysters at Bellanger.

Jeremy King, chief executive and co-founder of Corbin & King, said: “This has been a difficult decision but after over three years of trading in Islington it is clear that it won’t be the financial success to match the critical one we were so proud of.

“We love Islington, but unfortunately, Bellanger didn’t quite catch the imagination of the community.”

The French restaurant opened at the end of 2015. It has the capacity to sit about 240 people in one sitting.

About 90 per cent of the staff will be given jobs in other Corbin and King restaurants, Bellanger manager Mi Hai told the Tribune.

“It’s a massive place but that is the thing. Saturday and Sunday it is busy, but not so during the week,” he said.

“We had an amazing time here and we are feeling sad about the situation.

“We were aware it would close, but we thought it would happen later, maybe around December.”
