A BY-ELECTION has been triggered after the Town Hall leader officially stepped down from the council last night (Thursday).
Councillor Richard Watts, who has led the council for almost eight years, was succeeded by Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz at a meeting of the full council at the Town Hall.
He also resigned from his role as a councillor for Tollington ward, which he has represented since 2006, triggering a by-election that will be held on Thursday July 1.
This is the sixth by-election Islington has seen this year after a string of long-standing Labour councillors stepped down.
The Labour Party held every seat in the by-elections held on May 6.
Cllr Watts is set to take up a new role in City Hall as Mayor Sadiq Khan’s deputy chief of staff.
