Christmas switch-on in Angel set to be all aglow

08 November, 2019 — By Lucy Bacon

Last year’s Christmas lights switch-on in Angel

CHRISTMAS lights in Angel will be switched on during an evening of festive celebrations next week.

The streets of Angel will be transformed between 4-8pm on November 14 with carol singers, musicians, stilt-walkers and characters from Angel’s history.

Islington Square will host two free mini-performances by the cast of the Nativity Pantomime at the King’s Head Theatre this year at 7pm and 7.30pm, and will host a community choir at 6pm.

Musicians will entertain shoppers at Camden Passage from 4.30pm, with free roasted chestnuts on offer.

Shops across Angel will stay open until 8pm so visitors can start their Christmas shopping.

The event is being supported by local businesses who are holding activities with special offers. There will be paper star-making at fashion shop TOAST, free five-minute hand massages at The Body Shop, complimentary mulled cider at Bird & Blend, and free hot chocolate at the DoubleTree Hilton.

The night, called Glow in the Angel, is organised by angel.london, the business improvement district, who are hoping the new event will build on the success of last year’s lights switch-on.

Last year’s event, which took place on a Saturday afternoon, was a huge success. It featured music and food, and a procession from Islington fire station to Angel Central in time for the lights switch-on.

Christine Lovett, chief executive at angel.london, said: “We are delighted to be celebrating the start of the festive trading season by supporting our businesses with the first ever Glow in the Angel event. We’ve invested a further £45,000 in even more seasonal lights this year and hope that residents will continue to support their local high street in the run-up to Christmas.”
