Councillors back calls to save fruit and veg shop

13 April, 2018

Shopper Kay Scorah has started an online petition to save Market Garden

COUNCILLORS are supporting a campaign to keep a family-run greengrocers open.

The Tribune reported last week how the Market Garden, in Essex Road, has been told its future on the site is uncertain.

Jacqui Emery, who has run the fruit and veg shop with her husband for the past 20 years, said their lease is up in June and is unlikely to be renewed.

There are fears the site could become luxury flats but no planning application has yet been submitted.

Shopper Kay Scorah started an online petition to “save” the shop, which more than 700 people have signed.

Councillors for the St Peter’s Ward, Alice Perry and Martin Klute, executive member for economic development Asima Shaikh, and Labour candidate Vivien Cutler, have all signed the letter which warns a landlord would find it “extremely difficult” to change the use of the building or to build unaffordable flats.
