Defining an immigrant…

11 February, 2021

Sathnam Sanghera

• YOUR reviewer of Empireland describes its author, Sathnam Sanghera, as a “second generation immigrant”, (‘Empirical evidence’: Empireland – How Imperialism Has Shaped Modern Britain, February 4).

The phrase is nonsensical. The Oxford English Dictionary defines “immigrant” as “a person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country.”

If Mr Sanghera was born abroad and brought here as a child he’s an immigrant. If he was born here he is not.

The Queen is a direct descendant of George I and his wife who were immigrants from Germany. Is she a 10th-generation immigrant?
