Dip your toes in with boat club

ISLINGTON Boat Club is offering “taster days” for those who would like to try out kayaking, canoeing, speedboats and narrowboats.
The centre in City Road Basin launched its “MISSION50” campaign this year to raise £50,000 to ensure water-based activities can continue for future generations.
2020 was the club’s “golden anniversary” but it was sadly unable to celebrate due to the coronavirus restrictions.
Jan Dorling, of Islington Boat Club, said: “As part of our MISSION50 campaign, we’ve been hosting Sunday taster days for local residents and their families. They are proving to be really good fun – everyone is out on the water together, having a tea and a chat afterwards and sharing their experiences.
“There were so many elements to why we were doing this. One was to make it more fun. One was for people to see what was hiding behind the side-streets.
“They are finding the club and making friendships. That is what we are wanting to do.
“We were a youth club for 50 years but we are evolving and wanting to bring in more of the community.”
The next “taster days” will be on September 26, October 10 and October 24 and costs are from £5 for children and from £8 for adults.
Islington Boat Club also works with older residents, schools and children with disabilities.
