Don’t remove these trees

14 February, 2020

• THE east of Highbury Corner, on Canonbury Road, is the only side of the “square” surrounding Highbury Island that has a significant number of trees – about 15 form a green space, almost a small park.

It appears the council intends to remove half of them, despite acknowledging that a climate and ecology emergency exists. As a GP who has seen what grey streets and polluted air can do I ask them to think again.

It appears this green space will be sacrificed to a private building to help fund social housing further back on the same site. This can surely be built elsewhere rather than on top of one of the borough’s few green lungs.
