THE King’s Head Theatre has smashed its fundraising target, securing £120,000 to safeguard its immediate future.
As the Tribune previously reported, much of the borough’s fringe scene has been crowd-funding to stave off what some fear is an existential threat posed by Covid-19.
But thanks to a £35,000 grant from Arts Council England and a huge effort from donors and supporters, the King’s Head in Upper Street has stepped closer to safety.
Actors Ian Hallard and Mark Gatiss, who helped launch the appeal, said: “We’re thrilled that the public and the Arts Council have rallied round to raise funds to guarantee the survival of the King’s Head Theatre under the current circumstances. We now need the government to do their bit and come forward with a substantial support package for the entire theatre industry.
“We keep being promised that we’ll hear something soon. Let’s hope that we do.”
