Elderly enjoy slap-up festive lunch

Legendary Finsbury restaurant serves up free Christmas food

DOZENS of elderly residents enjoyed a free turkey supper with all the trimmings on Thursday as part of an annual tradition.

Legendary restaurant Fish Central, in Finsbury, hosted its Christmas lunch.

Mother and daughter, Jeannie Kirkwood, 71, and Jean Holt, 91, who live nearby, were among those tucking in.

“I come here every Friday with my friends. I’m trying to get my mum out more and we are having a very good time. The food looks lovely,” said Ms Kirkwood.

She has been going to the Central Street restaurant for more than 30 years. Owner George Hussein is now a good friend.

“There was a minibus full of people,” said head chef John Kennedy, who has worked at the restaurant for 12 years.

“It’s such a pleasure to work here.”

In the kitchen, chef Halit Salih was celebrating his birthday. His father, Erjay, who also works in the kitchen, has been there for 41 years.

Owner Mr Hussein is now looking forward to spending Christmas at home with his children and grandchildren.

“Merry Christmas to all,” he said.
