Emery: ‘North London derby is best match in the world’

Ozil could return at the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal boss looks ahead to Spurs clash

30 August, 2019 — By Steve Barnett

ARSENAL boss Unai Emery has described Sunday’s north London derby as the “best match in the world for football supporters”.

The rivals are both going into the mouth-watering Premier League fixture at the Emirates Stadium off the back of their first defeats of the season, with the Gunners losing 3-1 at Liverpool last weekend, while Spurs suffered a shock 1-0 home defeat against Newcastle.

It means the pressure is on to get the points, and Emery is hoping that his side will be the ones celebrating “a special day” with the fans come the sound of the final whistle.

He said: “Matches like last week against Liverpool, this week against Tottenham, they are the two teams who played the final of the Champions League. It’s amazing and is the best test.

“Every time is a good time to play against them with our supporters. Maybe this match on Sunday is the best match in the world for all football supporters.

“We can remember some positives and some less positive from each derby match. Overall I want to create a new derby, a new match, a new moment for us.

“We want to have a special day with our supporters at our home.”

Emery also confirmed Mesut Ozil is available for selection for the first time this season on Sunday, and ruled out the possibility of the playmaker leaving the club before Monday’s European transfer deadline.

“This week he is training well, and he is doing better physically. He will be closer and is going to be available for Sunday I think,” said the Spaniard.

“We are not speaking about the possibility of Mesut to leave.”

But the Gunners gaffer did reveal that there will be some exits at the Emirates. Nacho Monreal is a £3million target for Real Sociedad, while Shkodran Mustafi is also expected to leave, with the player’s father and agent saying it is “best” for both parties if the club help him secure a move.

Emery added: “We cannot sign another player but we have some players with the possibility to leave. The club is working, some players know their situation, my focus and the team’s focus is to prepare for Sunday.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal will host Championship side Nottingham Forest in the third round of the Carabao Cup. Wednesday night’s draw also saw Tottenham handed an away day, against League Two’s Colchester United, with the ties being played in the week beginning 23 September.
