Extremely lucky in our shops; great Angel characters; comedy of bar work

20 October, 2017 — By Helen Chapman

Julie Armstrong, 60, is a family solicitor and partner in a community local firm, Dowse and Co. She has lived in Islington since 1980 and says it has “a good and interesting history from the medieval times onwards. There are lots of independent shops and restaurants which we are lucky to have – I visit the extremely good butcher and fishmonger in Essex Road weekly. I think I am extremely lucky to live in Islington which is why I have never moved!”

Leo Daniels, 38, has owned the Shake Gallery and coffee shop in Chapel Market for 16 years. He says the area has transformed commercially over the years. “We have lots more restaurants and shops where the wealthy can buy things,” he says, “but this means prices have gone up for everyone.” Leo has lived in Angel for the past 20 years which he says is full of “lots of characters that make the world go round!”

Elizabeth Louise Hunt, 23, has lived in Finsbury her whole life. She says: “It is very central, everything I need is around me – Islington is full of restaurants. I eat out all the time – it’s where all my money goes!” Elizabeth has worked as a bartender “for too long!” But she says, “it’s fun. I meet loads of people. I served Chabuddy G the other day. He wasn’t as funny as I thought he would be, though!”
