Famous House Signs – and What Yours Says About You!

14 August, 2018

If the windows show you the soul of the house, then what would you guess that a house’s sign can say about the owners? A sign is more than just a sign that points to your house, it can be an overall expression of your style and tell guests more about the kind of person they’ll find living inside, same as happens with name badges in certain businesses.

Of course, signs can also act as a memorial when a house is famous or otherwise notable – and in this case, it usually contains a small write-up of history.

House signs should stand out; they should also be made from durable materials – though created with the environment in mind. There are plenty of signs out there that stood longer than the house it indicated!

Here’s a look at some famous house signs – and more information about how to make sure you choose the right one for your home or office.

Graceland is better known as being the lifelong home of one of the founding fathers of rock music, Elvis Presley.

The huge plot stands at 3764 Elvis Presley Boulevard, where its location is indicated by a simple oval sign that states “Home of Elvis A. Presley.” Blue, no frills, and it fits closer with the image that Presley kept at home than the hard-core bad boy rocker image he might have portrayed while performing on stage.

Today, the house is owned by Presley’s daughter, Lisa-Marie, and is considered an official National Landmark of historical importance.

What This Teaches You About Signs:
Sometimes simple is best. You don’t always need frills or huge golden letters. Sometimes all you need is a sign in front of your house that will let people know that this is home.

Ernest Hemingway’s House

Ernest Hemingway was an award-winning author known for stories like The Old Man and the Sea – and most people have encountered at least one paragraph of Hemingway in their lifetime.

The so-called Hemingway House is located at 907 Whitehead Street in Key West, Florida, USA – and today it serves as a museum and memorial to Hemingway’s memory and writing.

The sign in front of the Hemingway House is arguable as simple as the one chosen for the Graceland property and is a simple wooden sign noting the hours with “Open 9 a.m. ~ 5 p.m. daily” covered with a simplistic green border.

Some images show the sign with different admission prices listed – and it might be an adapted version of the original sign that changed over time.

What This Teaches You About Signs:
You’re not stuck with the same sign forever – this counts as much for your house as for historical monuments . When you need a change, change it.

Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix is arguably one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and every Hendrix fan will have their favourite song to think back to – for some, Purple Haze; for others, Little Wing.

His death shocked many, and there are many memorial sites across the globe to commemorate the artist and his music. The location of the Handel House is indicated by another simple blue sign that notes: “Guitarist and Songwriter lived her from 1968 to 1969.”

It’s also known for being more than just a museum dedicated to Hendrix; at the same time, it’s also dedicated to Handel. Yes, both notable artists lived here in the apartments adjacent to each other – and the one inspired the other.

In recent years, it has been especially refurbished and redone – but to keep the original quality.

What This Teaches You About Signs:
Sometimes there’s a ton of merit in taking an old sign off the wall and putting the work into getting it to look great again – or finding a reproduction that’s similar in style to the original.

Choosing a Sign for Yourself

When it’s time to pick a sign for your own house, you’ll want to choose something that’s durable and environmentally friendly at the same time – and something that can handle your local weather conditions.

Choose something in a colour that compliments what’s around it – and if you’re not sure yourself, consult an expert for help on just what kind of sign you should set up to fit with the rest of your house.
