A 33-YEAR-OLD man has been jailed for 10 years after stabbing his fiancée to death in the flat they shared in Angel.
Elidona Demiraj, 25, had been in the country for only three months before she was fatally attacked by Arben Rexha at a flat in Jessop Court, close to City Road Basin, on January 31, 2016.
Ms Demiraj had come to London from Albania to be with Rexha in what was believed to be an arranged marriage.
Rexha pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility at the Old Bailey in September last year, but sentencing took place on Friday following delays for a psychiatric report.
Police called by Rexha to the flat just before midnight found him with his arms outstretched and hands together ready to be arrested and handcuffed.
He would later claim he was suffering from mental health issues leading up to the attack. When questioned, he admitted killing his fiancée. In prison, he
was diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Ms Demiraj, who was found with multiple stab wounds to the throat, was pronounced dead at the scene in an attack which shocked the Albanian community.
Detective Inspector Paul Considine, who led the investigation, said: “This was a senseless death of a defenceless young woman who had her whole life in front of her.”
