THE clack clack clack of flamenco shoes echoed down the streets of Finsbury this week as London’s flamenco festival started at Sadler’s Wells theatre.
The world-renowned dancer Sara Baras opened the festival with her show Sombras –
meaning shadows – which featured seven musicians and six other dancers.
She specialises in the Farruca style of dance, which is usually performed only by men.
Other highlights of the festival include the Gala Flamenca this weekend, which will
showcase a series of dancers classed as some of the best in their field.
Alistair Spalding, artistic director and chief executive of Sadler’s Wells, said: “Celebrating the diversity and dynamism of flamenco is the heartbeat of the festival.
“I hope audiences will experience the vitality of flamenco – its heritage, culture and innovative developments – and enjoy the vision of the artists celebrating and reshaping it as an art form today.”
