Lennox Charles says his new team, dubbed London Zip, will help fulfil anyone’s ambition when it comes to basketball
A MAN who introduced basketball to a small island in the Caribbean is looking for players to join his new team, which he promises will be “like a family”.
Lennox Charles is a well-known figure in Finsbury where he chaired the volunteer-run Tenants’ Management Organisation for the Brunswick Close estate for many years.
The 69-year-old has also devoted many years of his life to basketball and he promises his new team, dubbed London Zip, will help fulfil anyone’s ambition when it comes to the game.
He said: “I’m looking for people who are serious and people who just want to play ball.
“But I don’t just want players but referees, people to look after the equipment and help me coach. It’s going to be like a family.”

The Town Hall has backed Mr Charles and he has already secured some funding for equipment and for hiring a court at the London Metropolitan University in Holloway Road.
He added: “I’ll coach you on how to spot the opponents’ weaknesses and raise your deference and strength.
“I can give you the skills so if you want to be professional, you can.”
Mr Charles spent his childhood in Union Island – a three-mile-wide island near St Vincent with a population of just 3,000 people.
But he first picked up basketball while working as a cab driver in New York in his early 20s.
He is credited in the book Union Island: Then and Now as being the person to introduce basketball to his homeland in 1975.
All ages and abilities are welcome to join Mr Charles at his sessions with a launch event called Christmas Basketball Scrimmage Galore planned at London Metropolitan University on December 18 at 5pm.
