IS sharp-shooter Leon Valmont the most lethal finisher in the borough?

The midfielder has scored a staggering 67 goals for Hampstead FC this season, including no fewer than 16 hat-tricks.

Such is Leon’s perfect timing when it comes to arriving in the box at just the right moment, that one of his biggest fans, his granddad Stuart, has dubbed him “The Ghost” – and even likened the 11-year-old to a West Ham legend.

Reflecting on all of the goals that he has scored in the Watford Friendly League this season, a modest but confident Leon said: “I’m not sure why I score so many goals, I’m just there at the right time. Scoring goals makes me happy. It’s a fantastic feeling to score a goal – even if it’s not in the Premier League. Whether it’s scoring in a none-competitive friendly league, or just down the park with your friends, it’s still really exciting.”

Leon, who lives in Muswell Hill but can often be found at weekends staying with his grandparents in Tufnell Park, was quick to push the praise and limelight onto those who make finding the back of the net that much easier.

He added: “I’m part of a really good team that defends really well and attacks really well. All my teammates support me, and so does my coach, my dad Jason, who knows how to really motivate us.”

Stuart knows a thing or two about being a good footballer, having played for two years in the West Ham youth ranks alongside club legends Trevor Brooking and Frank Lampard Senior. Never far from the touchline whenever Leon is playing, he said his grandson has definitely got that special something.

“I call Leon ‘The Ghost’ because of the consummate ease that he goes past players. He reminds me of a young Brooking – he used to be able to ghost past players, and had a fantastic engine. You’d never see him huffing and puffing. Just like Trevor, Leon can sometimes make the game look easy.”
