The Haverstock Year 9&10 team who are just two wins away from success

GIRLS’ football is on the up in north London with even more teams from across Camden and Islington now taking part in weekly leagues and cup competitions.

Just before schools broke up for half-term this week the girls’ Year 9&10s squad from Haverstock School, in Chalk Farm, had their sights set on silverware.

Zahra Mostafa, Gwen Bejholt and Morgan Ramsey all went goal-crazy to help fire Haverstock to the top of the table in their quest to win the prestigious Camden Shield.

The Shield sees girls’ and boys’ teams from secondary schools across Camden battle it out in a wide range of different sports, including football, basketball, netball and athletics, to reveal just who are the true sporting champions of the borough.

Ambler Primary School were narrowly pipped to cup victory by Canonbury

Haverstock are closing in on valuable points by winning the football tournament, but first the Year 9&10s side must overcome Hampstead and title rivals Acland Burghley in their final two games.

Their coach and teacher Annie Liddiard said: “The girls have remained unbeaten so far for the first time ever, and are full of belief and confidence.

“They can’t wait for the league title-decider against Burghley, which will hopefully be played in November.”

Meanwhile, across the borough boarder in Islington, the girls’ team from Ambler Primary School, in Finsbury Park, narrowly missed out on starting their half-term with a silverware celebration.

The school’s Year 3&4 squad topped their group in the Islington Football Development Partnership Primary Schools Cup, before beating Holloway-based Sacred Heart 2-0 in the semi-final.

A win in the final proved a step too far for Ambler on this occasion, however, as they were just pipped to the title by Canonbury School.

Highbury-based Canonbury featured in our headlines last week after running out 1-0 winners.
