A TEAM of five fighters from Islington Boxing Club travelled to Boras in Sweden over the weekend for the annual Golden Girls Box Cup.

Delighted duo Sunni Torgman and Claudia Wilmot-Smith couldn’t hide their delight after punching their way to glory in their respective weight divisions to win their first ever titles for Islington.

Competing in the Under-60kg Class ‘C’ category, Claudia used her jab to maximum effect against Aylin Özcelik in Sunday’s final. With the result hanging in the balance going into the third and final round, the Islington fighter unleashed a combination of clean shots which rocked Özcelik’s head back, resulting in the German receiving a standing eight count.

It proved a decisive moment in the contest as Claudia’s arm was raised in victory at the end of the bout after gaining a unanimous verdict from five ringside judges. Sunni was equally as impressive in the Under-57kg Class ‘C’ division as she comfortably won all three rounds against her much taller rival, Linda Larsson.

“The club’s support has been amazing. I couldn’t have done it without the rest of the girls, who were all fantastic,” beamed Claudia after her big win. “We’ve become even closer after the weekend.” Despite missing out on the medals, Amy Andrew, Amy Pu and Demi Carter all gained valuable experience ahead of what promises to be a busy 2017 for Islington Boxing Club.
