Highbury Leisure Centre build branded a ‘cruel pastiche’

Residents concern with changes at GLL-managed Highbury Leisure centre

15 September, 2017 — By Emily Finch

HIGHBURY residents this week dubbed changes to a leisure centre a “cruel pastiche” of the designs that were approved by Town Hall planners.

Works to extend the gym at the Islington Council-owned Highbury Leisure Centre are nearing completion – but residents said they are wildly different to the original plans.

“We are absolutely disheartened and shocked at what is currently being built,” said resident Jenny Sands, as she spoke at a public neighbourhood meeting on Wednesday.

Ms Sands said she was particularly concerned with the cladding on the refurbished building, the windows and brick colour.

Highbury East Labour ward councillor Osh Gantly added: “I think it’s very unfortunate what we see taking shape there because it is clearly not what we campaigned so hard for together.”

A Town Hall spokesman said: “We are aware of residents’ concerns about this work and we are investigating.”
