Holly Park estate new homes – it’s all much-needed council housing

12 July, 2019

Holly Park estate

• AS both the leader of Islington Council and a councillor for Tollington ward, I completely understand the frustration of some residents that the work to replace and renew windows at Holly Park is taking longer than originally hoped.

However, I must respond to some points in the letter (A homes shortage but flat is left empty for 18 months, July 5). None of the new housing on the estate is “private”, as is incorrectly stated several times in the letter; it is all much-needed new council housing.

I am proud that Islington has built 23 new council homes, from three-bed to one-bed, for local families in severe housing need.

All of these new council homes are making a huge difference to the people living in them and we again give a huge thanks to all the residents and tenants who had their say on the scheme and put up with noise and disruption while the new council homes were built.

Contrary to the claims in the letter, there have been significant improvements for the wider estate as part of the works to build new council homes.

One major improvement is the new Brickworks Community Centre, which is fully accessible for disabled people, and is one of Islington’s largest and most modern community centres.

Finally, our housing team is not aware of a property at Holly Park that has been untenanted for 18 months. I would be happy to investigate the claims about any other property if more details are shared with me.

Thankfully most of the work at Holly Park is now complete. However, our contractors do still have to access some homes to carry out work to windows, and scaffolding is needed for safety until work is complete.

Our contractors will continue to make every effort to contact those householders who have not already allowed access to their homes for this important work to be completed.

CLLR RICHARD WATTS
Leader of Islington Council
