Islington environment chief, Claudia Webbe, comes third in bid to become Labour candidate in Lewisham East by-election

A LEADING Town Hall councillor insists she could have won parliamentary selection in Lewisham East if there had more time for campaigning.
Islington environment chief Councillor Claudia Webbe came third at Satuday’s candidate hustings, which saw Janet Daby chosen to stand for Labour in an upcoming by-election.
Cllr Webbe said: “There were 1,600 members of the Labour Party [in the constituency] and only 29 per cent turned out. Therefore it’s clear one week wasn’t enough to generate the interest or enable people to alter their plans to be able to turn up and vote.”
The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Heidi Alexander, who is moving to work under London Mayor Sadiq Khan at City Hall.
Cllr Webbe said she was the most experienced candidate “on paper”, adding she was “proud” to stand on a shortlist with all BAME (Black, Asian and minority ethnic), female candidates.
