A LEADING Town Hall politician is in a tight race to become an MP in south London.
Cllr Claudia Webbe, a member of the ruling cabinet, has been named on a shortlist of four women for a by-election in the Labour stronghold Lewisham East.
Members of the party in Lewisham will chose their candidate tomorrow (Saturday).
Cllr Webbe, a long-term supporter of Jeremy Corbyn and former chair of the Met’s Operation Trident, was placed on a shortlist by a panel of three members of the party’s National Executive Committee.
She is backed by London MPs including Diane Abbott and also by two powerful unions – Unite and the Communication Workers Union. Hackney MP Ms Abbott said: “She would be an incredible asset to our parliamentary team as we seek to get Jeremy Corbyn into Number 10.”
If selected this weekend, Cllr Webbe would comfortably win the by-election next month.
The incumbent MP Heidi Alexander, who quit parliament to become London’s deputy mayor for transport, won more than 32,000 votes in the 2017 general election.
