A GROUP which opposed Brexit says it is determined to support EU nationals after the withdrawal agreement comes into effect at 11pm tonight (Friday).
Nick Turton, chairman of Islington in Europe, said: “Friday will be a dark, tragic day for our country, its economy and influence around the world. And also for the British people whether from Islington or Wakefield whose right to citizenship in 27 other countries is being removed.”
Residents in the borough overwhelmingly voted Remain at the 2016 Brexit referendum.
The council is hosting a free “community event” on Saturday to “celebrate Islington’s diversity” and highlight the support available to EU citizens.
Islington in Europe will have a stand at the “We are Islington” event in Memorial Green, Upper Street.
EU nationals currently have until at least December 31 to apply for settled status. Support can be found at islington.gov.uk/brexitsupport
