THE Islington Tribune has been crowned the Regional Press Awards’ Free Weekly Paper of the Year.
The independently-owned paper received the honour in an online ceremony on Friday seeing off quality papers in the shortlist including its sister title the Camden New Journal (CNJ).
Judges said of the Tribune: “This title shows that just because you are free that doesn’t mean you are not a superb newspaper. Packed with local news and investigations, the paper’s team shows how close it is to the community it serves. The paper’s focus on the area’s hospital is comprehensive, its holding of the Mayor of London to account over local road deaths shows tenacity and guts.”
The CNJ picked up two gongs at the industry’s “Oscars”, the Campaign of the Year and reporter Dan Carrier was recognised with a “Special Award” for his work during the Covid-19 crisis as he became a one man food bank with his van delivering thousands of meals around the borough.
