Karl Marx memorial in Highgate Cemetery daubed with red paint in second vandal attack

Famous tomb vandalised for second time in less than a month

16 February, 2019 — By Dan Carrier

VANDALS have struck again at Highgate Cemetery, daubing the Karl Marx memorial with red paint and slogans.

Damage at the cemetery

The damage was revealed this morning (Saturday) with cemetery chief Dr Ian Dungavell describing the attack on the tomb as “senseless”.

It is the second attack on the memorial this year with attempts to hack away at its marble plaque discovered earlier this month.

Dr Dungavell said: “The memorial has now been partially cleaned, and we’ll clean the rest of the paint off in the week. Restoring that central marble tablet will be an interesting question.”

He added: “The senseless smashing of the marble tablet is what makes me most annoyed, and which will be repugnant to any thoughtful person.’
