A HIGH-SPEED car chase ended with a suspected drug dealer being pursued on foot down a road by armed police officers.

Residents living near the junction of New North Road and Essex Road in Angel rushed out on Wednesday night after they heard a “big screech” and then a loud “bang”.

Officers in Hackney had requested the car to stop at about 9.35pm in Richmond Road, Barnsbury.

The car sped off and the police pursued. The car then collided with another vehicle before crashing into traffic lights in Essex Road.

A woman living near the junction told the Tribune: “We heard the police siren, then you heard a big screech, then a bang and then another screech which I think was the police car behind.

“You can still see the skid marks.”

Her partner added: “This all happened in seconds.

“The airbag went off inside the car. This guy went out and ran down the road.

“Everyone was out looking. You could see it was armed police by the black outfits. We see a lot of trouble up here.”

Essex Road was cordoned off at the scene on Wednesday night.

The man who fled the car was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply and driving offences and taken into custody where he remains.
