A MAN has been detained by police after climbing onto the roof of a property in Archway armed with a knife and a hammer.

Police were called to Archway Road at about 7.50pm yesterday (Monday) evening to reports of a disturbance.

On arrival, concerns were raised for the welfare of a man inside the property who said he was armed, a Metropolitan Police spokesman said.

“He was seen on the property’s roof carrying a knife and a hammer,” the spokesman added.

The road was cordoned off in both directions between Archway and Hornsey Lane Gardens.

A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I saw two policemen close off the road and, soon after that, the situation became more intense. More police arrived and I even heard a helicopter.”

Police deployed a Taser and the man was detained on the roof of a nearby property.

The resident added: “After around 20 minutes, the police stormed inside a house and came out with a man. He was handcuffed and they took him away on an ambulance.” The resident said he did not see any visible injuries on the man.

The police spokesman added that the man will be subject to a mental health assessment.
