NEIGHBOURS helped each other escape from a fire in a block of flats in Caledonian Road on Sunday.

Twenty firefighters tackled the blaze on the Bemerton estate, in Earlsferry Way.

“There was a man running up and down shouting to get people out. He went into the flats and helped elderly and disabled people get out,” said resident Emma Yeomans, 21. “There was no panic but people were very shaken.”

She added: “There was really a lot of smoke. There were visible orange flames going up the building and it looked very bad.”

Three people in the blaze flat left before firefighters arrived. They were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by alongside three neighbours. Half of a split-level maisonette was damaged. The London Fire Brigade is treating the fire as accidental.
