POLICE have made multiple arrests after breaking up a fight between a large group of youngsters on Hampstead Heath during which officers were assaulted.

Dozens of police officers, some wearing protective gear, intervened among hundreds of young people who had gathered around a brawl taking place close to the Parliament Hill Lido this evening (Tuesday).

Video footage from the scene showed a large group of teenagers appearing not to be abiding by distancing restrictions before a number of officers ran over and dispersed the group.

Ward sergant for Hampstead Town and Highgate John Hounsell was among the first officers at the scene and described what happened as a “serious public order incident”.

“No one was seriously injured but police officers were assaulted during the incident,” said Sgt Hounsell.

“We had reports of hundreds of young people drinking in separate groups but officers were on the Heath initially responding to reports of a robbery when we heard that a fight had broken out.

“It was 50/50 girls and boys but it was mainly girls fighting. Currently, I’m aware of three girls and two boys have been arrested,” he added.

“Some of the group turned on officers as they intervened.”

The incident attracted a huge police presence and a helicopter was deployed to chart developments from the sky.

A S35 dispersal order was placed on the Heath and those involved in the gathering split into groups and asked to leave the park.

Sgt Hounsell said: “In terms of Covid it’s still against the law to be in a group of more than six outside and parents can be held responsible if children are found breaking the restrictions.

“We will be looking into all the offences committed during the fight and assaults on police officers and will be contacting parents and schools to inform them of what their children have been up to.”

The entrances to Hampstead Heath have been blocked off and the British Transport Police were seen at Gospel Oak station.

Camden Town police Twitter reported 6 people have been arrested.
