JEREMY Corbyn and his wife Laura Alvarez joined community leaders for iftar, the breaking of the daily fast during Ramadan, at the Finsbury Park mosque on Wednesday night.
The Labour Party leader, who gained a vote share of 73 per cent in his Islington North constituency in last week’s general election, praised the mosque’s community spirit and called for unity across the UK.
“We are a multifaith country, we are a multiethnic, multicultural, multilingual society. It’s not a problem, it’s actually a strength and we should be proud of that,” he said.
Mosque chairman Mohammed Kozbar said worshippers had faced a higher incidence of Islamophobia following the recent terrorist atrocities in the UK.
“It is not fair for the whole community to be blamed for something which has nothing to do with them,” he said.
Finsbury Park mosque is currently accepting donations for those who lost their home during the Grenfell tower fire in Latimer Road.
