THE hard-hitting Ewan Jenkins will be looking to edge a step closer to a national title on Sunday when he takes on Sam Noakes from Westree ABC in the quarter-finals of the National Association of Boys and Girls Clubs Boxing Championships.

The Islington Boxing Club light-welterweight will go into the showdown in Farnham in confident mood after claiming his third London title when he defeated Saquib Khan from Repton ABC at the Dagenham Roundhouse a fortnight ago. Jenkins, 20, won the Under-64kg Class D bout via a split decision.

George Bartlett

“Ewan beat Kanishka Amiry from Fisher ABC the day before in the semi-final and sustained a nasty cut under his right eye,” revealed Islington coach Roy Callaghan. “In the final he boxed smart to protect the cut, and beat his opponent with his superior boxing skills. He fought well.”

Meanwhile, on Saturday night, Islington’s “Gorgeous” George Bartlett represented London in a team match against Dublin at the Royal National Hotel in Russell Square, Bloomsbury. Competing at 48kg, the 14-year-old put in a positive performance, boxing on the front foot, but narrowly lost the bout on a close split decision against Padraig Stapleton.
