Remember Sir Keir’s unscripted conference intervention?

10 January, 2020

Labour leadership contender Sir Keir Starmer

• WHO can forget the Labour Party conference in 2018 when, unannounced and without the prior agreement of his shadow cabinet colleagues, Sir Keir Starmer announced from the podium in Liverpool that Labour should “campaign for a public vote” on Theresa May’s Brexit deal and that “nobody is ruling out remain as an option”?

As we can now see, with the benefit of hindsight, that unscripted intervention by Sir Keir was the undoing of Labour; it led to the confused, looking-both-ways Brexit policy that Labour was unable to sell on the doorstep – particularly in the north.

So I do find it ironic that the man who, singlehandedly, was the cause of Labour’s massive defeat in the general election is now campaigning to become the leader.
