‘Replace HS2 with solar panels’ petition reaches more than 15,000 signatures

But Government says solar power subsidies are a waste of public funds

02 April, 2019 — By Tom Foot

Hs2 are digging up graves in Euston

HS2 should be scrapped and funding spent on solar energy, according to a petition signed by 15,000 people.

The petition calls for the Government to abandon the railway as it is an “obscene waste of public money when all of our vital services have been cut to the bone and there is great suffering and hardship, due to the Government’s harsh policy of austerity”.

HS2 works in and around Euston station are due to last until 2033.

The petition adds: “HS2 is also forcing people out of their homes and businesses, destroying eco systems and wildlife everywhere, and has destroyed, and is still in the process of cutting down our beautiful mature oxygen giving trees.”

“With the projected cost of HS2 rising towards £100billion, it would be better to stop the project now and use the money saved to provide free solar panels to the whole of the country.”

The Government has responded to the petition, saying: “The government believes that providing new subsidies for solar power is not the best use of public money.”
