Sacking means loss of hospital’s champion

Steve Hitchins: ‘He always listened’
• I WORK at the Whittington Hospital and you couldn’t be more wrong about the sudden departure of our much-loved chairman Steve Hitchins, (I wanted to carry on, says axed hospital boss, June 28).
He was everywhere, knew so many of us and insisted that we call him Steve. He supported the whistle-blowers, the low-paid and those whom the system abused. He always listened. Many of us miss him already. We think he’s been sacked by the powers that be because he fought to keep Whittington Health as an independent trust.
Steve always gave us confidence that if we did our job he would do his. Now everyone at Whittington Health should be worried. We’ve lost our champion. Will we lose our hospital next? The NHS makes many bad decisions but this one has damaged us all locally.
