Carol Jewel introduces the Belsize Festival on Sunday

• String chamber music and jazz are being played at the annual Belsize Festival Music Weekend at St Peter’s Belsize Square this Saturday and Sunday evenings (May 27 and 28). Schubert’s famed Trout Quintet is being played on Saturday evening alongside pieces by Bach, Schumann and Elgar. Vocalist Carol Jewel is singing with the Rob Barron Trio at the Sunday evening jazz gig – and they’re being joined by versatile, exciting vocalist Brigitte Beraha.
St Peter’s, Belsize Square, NW3, both evenings start at 7.30pm, £10 per concert (inc refreshments),

• Music from the Naughty Nineties to the Roaring Twenties is being played by the Aspidistra Drawing Room Orchestra at Lauderdale House on bank holiday Monday afternoon (May 29). Expect lively ragtimes, burlesque, waltzes and tangos inter-mixed with romantic string serenades.

• Minimalist five-piece Brooklyn ensemble Bing & Ruth is performing its new album No Home for the Mind at LSO St Luke’s on Friday evening, May 27. The ensemble is noted for its use of the piano as a drone instrument. Using rapid clusters of repeating notes, “piano figures hang in space like clouds of slowly shifting sound,” notes one critic. Other instruments’ parts are related to what the piano is doing.

• Different instrument combinations can make for fascinating listening. A case in point involves two oboists and a cellist playing the lunchtime recital at St Pancras Church, Euston Road, next Thursday (June 1). Oboe players Elsie Woollard and David Presly plus cellist Rachael Maguire are performing music by Bach, Mozart and Piazzolla.
