Spending is over for now, says Arsenal boss Emery

New Gunners head coach has ‘signed the players he needs’

Unai Emery: ‘We signed the players who we need. Only if one player is a big opportunity for us to sign we can do it’

NEW Arsenal head coach Unai Emery says that his summer recruitment drive is done – unless a “big opportunity” arises.

The former Paris Saint-Germain and Sevilla manager has already brought in Lucas Torreira, Bernd Leno, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Matteo Guendouzi and Stephan Lichtsteiner for fees that could collectively exceed £70million.

“We signed the players who we need. Only if one player is a big opportunity for us to sign we can do it,” Emery said. “In this moment I think the squad is complete, [there is] only the possibility for one player or two players to leave.”

There is, however, one deal that the Spaniard still wants to get over the line. Talks are continuing between the Gunners and Aaron Ramsey over a new contract. The midfielder has one year left on his current deal and securing his future is believed to be a big priority for Emery as he continues to shape his squad ahead of his first season in charge.

Reflecting on his first impression of Ramsey having now seen him in training, Emery said: “I’m very happy with him. Every day, every training session he is with the ambition I want. He is working with quality. I want to work with him.”

Asked why the Wales international has yet to sign a new deal, Emery added: “This is one question for the player, and the club, but my opinion – I said to them – I think he is one important player for me.”

There are some reports that Emery is actually keen to bring in two more players before the end of the transfer window, but the north Londoners will have to sell players first in order to raise funds. With that in mind they are believed to be willing to listen to offers for the likes of Nacho Monreal, Shkodran Mustafi, Danny Welbeck, and David Ospina.

Another player who could be allowed to leave if the right offer comes in is Petr Cech, with Chelsea rumoured to be interested in re-signing their former goalkeeper.

Meanwhile, Emery’s first game in charge couldn’t have gone much better, with the Gunners thumping Boreham Wood 8-0 at Meadow Park on Saturday. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a hat-trick, while Reiss Nelson, Alexandre Lacazette, Eddie Nketiah, Jeff Reine-Adelaide and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were also all on target.
