ISLINGTON Boat Club will be marking its 50th anniversary next month.

Located in City Road Basin, off the Regent’s Canal between The Angel and Old Street, the club offers a range of activities and facilities for families, youngsters and anyone who likes water sports or those who simply want to relax and enjoy the view.

Activities the club offers include kayaking, canoeing and paddle-boarding with beginner-friendly programmes. In addition, the Upper Deckers Club also gives people over 50 the opportunity to try something new and meet people.

Originally part-funded by Islington Council, the club was founded in 1970 by Crystal Hale, who in 1975 set up the annual Angel Canal Festival.

The boat club now depends entirely on fundraising.

Filippo Gaddo, who chairs the club’s trustees, said: “All of us at Islington Boat Club are immensely proud of what we have achieved in 50 years of existence and very excited that we will have the opportunity on April 26 to celebrate that achievement with the wide community of people whose lives have been affected by the club over the years. We look forward to welcoming you all on the day.”
