A SUSPECTED gunman fled from police after he made his way on to the roof of a five-storey building in Newington Green.

Residents living in the Mayville Estate described seeing a man running across the chimneys at the council-owned property at around 8am this morning.

A woman, who did not want to be named, said: “We heard banging, it was the police banging on someone’s door. I didn’t hear any [gun] shots. Then I saw a man on the chimneys.”

Another resident, who has lived in the estate for five years, said: “It’s usually safe here and I’ve never had any problems.”

Police were at Congreve House carrying out a search warrant at 8am.

The Met Police said a man, believed to be in possession of a firearm, made his way on to the roof of the 1950s property.

A spokesman said no firearm has been found or confirmed as sighted.

Forensic officers comb area around Congreve House

There was a huge police presence at the estate which included firearm officers and members of the London Ambulance Service. There have been no reports of injuries.

Residents described seeing a man being led out of the block in handcuffs but he was later seen being escorted back to the block at just after 11am.

Police said they detained the man after entering the property but said this was a different man to the individual on the roof.

He was searched and not arrested.

Forensic officers were seen combing the area with sniffer dogs at 11am while a cordon remained in place.

The roads around the estate have now reopened. It is not known who the police were hoping to arrest.
