TfL told to stop ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’ announcements at Tufnell Park tube station

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has promised 'gender neutral' messages at stations

15 June, 2017 — By Geoffrey Sawyer

TRANSPORT bosses have been ticked off for running “ladies and gentlemen” announcements over the tannoy at Tufnell Park tube station after London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he would make the messages gender neutral.

Sian Berry, the Green councillor and London Assembly member, has urged Mr Khan to ensure the announcements at the station are altered, along with recordings played to passengers at King’s Cross and Canary Wharf stations.

It follows a campaign for changes in public life to make transgender people feel less “shut out of society”. Ms Berry will question the Mayor on the issue at City Hall next week.

Mr Khan said last year: “Transport for London works with charity groups who represent the trans community, to foster understanding and encourage open dialogue to improve transport services. For example, it is working on implementing gender-neutral announcements across its network.”
