King’s Cross Hurricanes: Chalk Fark league’s Division One champions
TOP potters from across Camden and Islington came together to reflect on “a sensational season” in the Chalk Farm Pool League with a glitzy awards ceremony.
The evening at the Boston Arms pub in Tufnell Park was a celebration of a topsy-turvy campaign that provided plenty of thrills and spills at the table.
In the top flight, it was the players from King’s Cross Hurricanes who were left cheering when the chalk dust settled as they finished just two points above Boston Arms to clinch the Division One title.
Green Man were Division Two winners
Incredibly, the Division Three title chase was even closer, with just one point separating champions King’s Cross Gunners and runners-up The Florin. There was no such nail-biting in Division Two, where Islington-based Green Man finished 23 points ahead of their nearest rivals.

Sir Robert Peel also pocketed success after getting their hands on the much-sought-after Liam Tarrant Cup, dubbed the league’s version of the FA Cup. If the rumours are true that it is the Peel’s swansong season, then winning the cup would be the perfect ending for one of the most successful sides to ever compete in the league.

League chairman Shaun Pollard, however, remains optimistic. He said: “There had been talk that Peel would now call it a day because most of their players are taking a break from the game, but there was a glint in their captain John Brown’s eye when I asked him. I couldn’t pin him for a definitive answer, but I’m feeling confident they’ll be back to challenge once again for the title and defend our FA Cup.”

Along with teams collecting their trophies, there was plenty of individual success to celebrate during awards night, which was held on Saturday, July 7. The Green Man dominated the Singles Championship, with their pocket rocket Danny Fry winning the men’s competition and Aisha Omar beating holder Ursula Ali to take the ladies’ title.

Boston Arms duo Kevin Howard and Rory Cooper collected their doubles trophy, while seniors champion John Hossein, who plays for the King’s Cross Hawks, and Captain’s Cup winner Paul Smith, from the Peckwater Playboys, also both picked up their prizes.
